Why do leaders initiate change in their organizations or teams? Change can be pro-active or re-active. Good leaders think about change before it is needed and this enables the organisation to grow in a sustainable way. These leaders plan ahead for difficult times, such as a crisis. When leaders are pro-active, individuals and the organisation thrive. God created us to thrive (Genesis 1:28) and Jesus has brought abundant life (John 10:10b). While our confidence is in God’s blessing as we serve Him, He requires us to plan well.

Shelley Trebesch writes “In flourishing environments, we pursue meaning and purpose. We innovate and adapt to adjust in new situations or when faced with challenges. Organizations oriented towards the kingdom of God, whether churches, NGOs, mission agencies, or other non-profits or businesses ultimately should flourish”.*

Convinced that no one should live and die without hearing God’s good news, we in SIM are passionately committed to make disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ in communities where He is least known. To facilitate this growth, our structures should enable us to flourish and grow at all levels: firstly at the personal level, then as multi-ethnic, multi-skilled ministry and leadership teams, and finally in our partnerships with churches and other organisations.

As our International Director Dr Joshua Bogunjoko says, “ministry and organisational growth [must be] paired with the growth of our people’s passion, faith and skill. Our faithful service will lead to lasting fruit only if we shepherd intentionally; helping those in our ecosystem to flourish and grow in spiritual vitality. We need to keep both our purpose and the growth of our people in balance”.

Let us look at this in practice. Dr Bogunjoko will be working with an Executive team of six Global Directors, who will bring expertise in the areas of Ministry Outreach, Mission Engagement, People Development and Care, Operations, Strategic Development and Regional Development. In addition to these Global Directors, SIM’s new International Leadership Team will include ten Regional Directors, for our ten global regions.

Of SIM’s 4000 workers worldwide#, these Regional Directors will be responsible for the flourishing of the SIM people in their region. This is pro-active change, to enable SIM to grow in a sustainable manner. Our people are our most precious resource, and we want each of them to flourish spiritually, mentally, emotionally and physically (Luke 2:52). We want every SIM person to joyfully demonstrate the lifestyle that Jesus offers to those who are hearing of Him for the first time through an SIM witness.

        Shelley  G. Trebesch
